Federal and state governments have the power to regulate many operations of a business.
Pollutant emissions and employment practices are just two illustrations. Governments
also have the power to tax corporations. Because regulation and taxation
are costly to firms, managers can be expected to take actions that minimize these
costs. Because these costs are imposed via the political process, they are referred to
as political costs.
Some accountants suggest that highly profitable firms are more exposed to political
costs than less profitable ones. Relatively profitable firms are more likely to be the
target of antitrust investigations or special tax assessments. For example, in the mid-
1970s, firms in the oil industry earned unusually high profits due to a steep rise in oil
prices. As a result, Congress enacted the Windfall Profits Tax, which subjected these
companies to an additional tax on their earnings. More recently, Microsoft, Inc. has
been the target of intense scrutiny by federal regulators because of its dominance in
the computer operating system market and its resultant profitability.
Some accountants also argue that larger firms are more susceptible to regulation
and taxation because their size attracts more attention. Accordingly, the managers of
larger firms are particularly motivated to undertake actions that minimize political
costs. One of these actions is the selection of accounting principles that reduce reported
net income. Note that compensation plans and debt contracts motivate managers
to select accounting principles that increase reported income, whereas political
costs have the opposite effect.
This method is based on application of a digital decimation filter, and on its ability to determine
the number of 1's in input signal. An FIR filter is typically used. This filter contains elements of the time delay "?" and adder "?". Each element has a
delay equal to ?, and the adder sums the current input with previous inputs, delayed by ?, 2?, 3?,… (2N – 1)?.
The filter is controlled at the quantization rate fq, and the adder output data are changed with this rate.
When a generator is suddenly connected to a length of transmission line, there will be a
time delay until the signal travels to the other end of the line. During this time, the
generator has no knowledge of how long the line might be. The generator has to supply
energy to the line so as to establish the electromagnetic fields around the conductors.
The energy is stored in the capacitance between the conductors (proportional to the
square of the voltage between the wires) and in the magnetic field around the

exhibited a severity of manners by his unkept dress. He frequently appeared in a threadbare and
ragged cloak. An anecdote relates that Socrates, remarked that Anthisthenes took pains to expose,
rather than to conceal the tattered state of his dress, and said to him, "Why so ostentatious?
Through your rags I see your vanity." After the death of Socrates in 339 BCE. Antisthenes
established a school in the only gymnasium open to half-Athenian descent. The place was called
Cynosarges, hence his followers bore the name "Cynics". It is also argued that the followers were
called Cynics from the habits of the school, which, to the more refined Athenians, appeared those

is listed in the telephone directory. The catch is, the only directory you have is arranged by
telephone number, not alphabetical order. This requires you to search page after page trying
to find the name you want. This inefficient situation is exactly the same as searching all 4096
codes for a match to a specific character string. The answer: organize the code table so that
what you are looking for tells you where to look (like a partially alphabetized telephone
directory). In other words, don't assign the 4096 codes to sequential locations in memory.
Rather, divide the memory into sections based on what sequences will be stored there.
For example, suppose we want to find if the sequence: code 329 + x, is in the code table.
The code table should be organized so that the "x" indicates where to starting looking.
There are many schemes for this type of code table management, and they can become
quite complicated.

Federal and state governments have the power to regulate many operations of a business.
Pollutant emissions and employment practices are just two illustrations. Governments
also have the power to tax corporations. Because regulation and taxation
are costly to firms, managers can be expected to take actions that minimize these
costs. Because these costs are imposed via the political process, they are referred to
as political costs.
Some accountants suggest that highly profitable firms are more exposed to political
costs than less profitable ones. Relatively profitable firms are more likely to be the
target of antitrust investigations or special tax assessments. For example, in the mid-
1970s, firms in the oil industry earned unusually high profits due to a steep rise in oil
prices. As a result, Congress enacted the Windfall Profits Tax, which subjected these
companies to an additional tax on their earnings. More recently, Microsoft, Inc. has
been the target of intense scrutiny by federal regulators because of its dominance in
the computer operating system market and its resultant profitability.
Some accountants also argue that larger firms are more susceptible to regulation
and taxation because their size attracts more attention. Accordingly, the managers of

codes for a match to a specific character string. The answer: organize the code table so that
what you are looking for tells you where to look (like a partially alphabetized telephone
directory). In other words, don't assign the 4096 codes to sequential locations in memory.
Rather, divide the memory into sections based on what sequences will be stored there.
